During the past years, the steep increase of litter size, without the simultaneous increase in the size of genital track, the number of available tits and the consequent full utilization of milk production, resulted in the increase of stress that pregnant sows undergo and the depletion of their body reservoirs during lactation. This leads in a decreased productive lifespan, due to earlier culling. The increase of litter size also lead in the reduction of piglets' birth weight, in greater heterogeneity among littermates, in increased losses during lactation and in a decrease of the average weight at weaning.
